Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment

RWS is part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. RWS manages the Netherlands’ main highway network and main waterway network. Its responsibilities include smooth and safe traffic flows, a safe, clean and user-friendly national waterway system and protection from flooding:

RWS is the lead partner in this project and one of the managers of the Schelde estuary. Together, RWS and MOW work on the research program on interventions and their effects in the aspects of flood safety, naturalness and accessibility of the Scheldt estuary under responsibility of the Flemish Dutch Schelde Commission. This research program has been determined by the Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission. An important aim of the coming years is to determine the agenda for future management and development of the estuary. For the Schelde Development Outline 2010 a platform of advisory organisations was established. This platform will be revitalized for this project to involve the relevant stakeholders.
